Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve hot and cold beverages to MADO standards, including espresso-based drinks, filter coffee, teas, specialty seasonal beverages, and cold brews.
  • Operate and care for espresso machines, grinders, brewers, and other beverage equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and in line with company cleaning schedules.
  • Execute consistent extraction and milk-texturing techniques to ensure quality, taste, and visual presentation of each beverage.
  • Maintain speed and accuracy during peak service periods while ensuring each drink meets recipe and portion specifications.
  • Greet guests warmly, take beverage orders, answer product questions, and provide recommendations to enhance the guest experience.
  • Prepare mise en place for beverage service: grind coffee to specification, calibrate grinders, set up brewing parameters, and stage ingredients and garnishes.
  • Monitor inventory of coffee beans, milk, syrups, teas, and consumables; rotate stock using FIFO principles and communicate shortages or quality issues to supervisors.
  • Clean and sanitise the coffee station, glassware, utensils, and equipment regularly; complete daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning checklists.
  • Create and maintain attractive beverage displays and signage; ensure price lists and menus are accurate and readable.
  • Train and mentor junior baristas and front-of-house staff on basic beverage preparation and service standards when required.
  • Follow allergen handling protocols and accurately record special dietary requests to prevent cross-contact.
  • Contribute to beverage development by testing new recipes, suggesting seasonal offerings, and participating in tastings and trials.
  • Adhere to cash-handling and POS procedures when taking orders and processing payments; support takeaway and delivery order workflows.
  • Comply with food safety, hygiene, and workplace health and safety policies at all times.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1–2 years’ experience as a Barista or in a similar role within a café, restaurant, or hotel environment.
  • Strong knowledge of espresso extraction, milk steaming, and basic latte-art techniques; experience with commercial espresso machines and grinders.
  • Good understanding of coffee origins, roast profiles, and brewing methods; willingness to continue learning about specialty coffee.
  • Excellent customer service skills with a friendly, professional manner and ability to work under pressure.
  • Basic numeracy and POS handling experience; reliability with cash and electronic transactions.
  • Strong attention to detail, consistency, and pride in presentation.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including early mornings, weekends, and public holidays as rostered.
  • Good communication skills in English; additional languages are beneficial.
  • Food safety awareness; a valid food handler certificate is an advantage.
  • Physical capability to stand for long periods, lift moderate weights, and work in a warm environment.
